Die Reichsstadt Augsburg hat eine bedeutende Medizingeschichte, obwohl es keine Universität vor Ort gab. Neben namhaften Augsburger Ärzten und Apothekern ist nicht zuletzt das Moment der Distribution im Buchdruck zu nennen sowie das ambitionierte Collegium Medicum. Die Fugger spielten keine kleine Rolle beim Ausbau der medizinischen Versorgung. Die Industrialisierung Augsburgs im 19. Jahrhundert führte ebenso zu Verbesserungen in der medizinischen Infrastruktur. Der Band bietet eine systematische Überschau zur Augsburger Medizingeschichte vom Mittelalter bis zur Moderne unter Einbezug der europäischen Vernetzung der lokalen Akteure, die bislang weitgehend ausstand.

Even though it did not have a university, the history of medicine in the imperial town of Augsburg is important. Alongside renowned Augsburg doctors and apothecaries, attention must be paid to the role played by dissemination in print. This volume provides a systematic overview of the history of medicine in Augsburg from the Middle Ages to modern times, considering local actors’ European networks, which had largely been overlooked until now.
