French Decadence in a Global Context - Colonialism and Exoticism

The heyday of French Decadence in the fin-de-siècle period is contemporary with the expansion of France's modern colonial empire. This study surveys some of the many different and often contradictory intersections between the two phenomena, from exoticism to anxieties about cultural purity, from colonial discourse to anarchist anticolonialism.
