What do we know about the communities which lived closed to the Charente river between the 6th and 10th centuries, forty kilometres from the Atlantic ocean ? To answer this question, archaeologists went and observed the bottom of the river, the remains of the occupations, especially well preserved by their long stay in a wet environment : dugouts, wooden and stoned dykes, fishery, arms, ceramics, tools and fishing weights reveal totally umprecedented information about the utilising of fluvial environment during the Merovingian and Carolingian eras. The presence, among all these objects, of elements of Nordic origin, also allows asking the question of viking pass through the Saintonge during the 9th century. The studies of maps and old plans, boats graffitis, the materials analysis (wood and lead), as well as prospectings led on the riverbanks, complete this study of a fluvial area, exceptionally rich in evidences from an unknown past.
