Summary

Drawing on the archives of ten colleges and universities across Britain (from 1860-1939), this book offers a new explanation for how British higher education became coeducational, arguing that gender-integrated universities played an important role in making the hetero/homo binary foundational to middle-class life in the twentieth century.
