Lady Georgiana Claverton is fed up with the ton in general and the marriage mart in particular. Having endured several seasons to fulfill her parents' wishes, and having come to the conclusion that all men are inept and self-centered, she has decided to rejoice in the inheritance left her by a wealthy aunt and remain single, until she encounters the brash American who has inherited a nearby estate. Coming upon Justin Appleton in a sweat-soaked shirt laboring in his smithy, proves to her in the most knee-weakening way why the schoolmates she had scorned for their idiocy, acted so foolishly over men. Now, all too aware of the reason, she is determined to ignore it, but that is no easy task, especially when he rescues her from an irate neighbor.Justin Appleton has been so devoted to building canals; he has never had time or the interest in anything else, mocking friends who fall for pretty faces. Now it is not a pretty face, but a challenging, and intelligent woman who rapidly becomes his obsession. How can an American engineer and a British aristocrat overcome the ocean that will separate them and the stubborn independence they admire in one another.

About the author

I started writing to keep myself from going crazy hunting for a library job in the awful job market 40 years ago, and I discovered I loved it. A few months later, I got a job as a young adult librarian in what is now my local public library and finished a book over the year, setting it aside for five years while I concentrated on work (by then, Head of Reference and later Assistant Director) when I started contacting a few publishers who quickly responded with standard rejection letters until Penguin misplaced the manuscript and felt so apologetic they offered a two book contract. I published a book a year, and one reissue, for 16 years until they closed the line. Those books are still selling steadily as e-books for Belgrave House. In 2021 Camel Press brought out, Mistress of Fashion, the first book in my Ladies of Independent Means trilogy. Mistress of Herself is the first book in a duology sequel to Ladies of Independent Means. Retired from full-time library work, I continue part-time in the best job of all, reference librarian in a very busy library.
