This second volume on the LNER 4-4-0 locomotives describes the design, construction, history, operation and performance of the North Eastern, North British, Great North of Scotland and Gresley LNER built examples, classified by the LNER at the Grouping as classes, D17 - D24, D25 - D36, D38 - D48 and D49 respectively. It covers from their emergence in the late nineteenth century to their demise in the mid or late 1950s and early 1960s with their performance at their peak operation times, mainly in the inter-war years of LNER ownership.

About the author










David Maidment was a senior manager with British Railways, with widespread experience of railway operating on the Western and London Midland Regions culminating in the role of Head of Safety Policy for the BRB after the Clapham Junction train accident.

He retired in 1996, was a Principal Railway Safety Consultant with International Risk Management Services from 1996 to 2001 and founded the Railway Children charity (www.railwaychildren.co.uk) in 1995. He was awarded the OBE for services to the rail industry in 1996 and is now a frequent speaker on both the charity.
