Summary

Cornutus’s Compendium is a unique example of an ancient handbook intended to teach physical truths through the etymological and allegorical interpretation of myths. No commentary on this work exists despite the increasing research interest it generates.
The core of the monograph is the critical edition of Cornutus’s text and its commentary. Detailed attention is paid to the similitudes or coincidences with other mythographical works, both hypotexts (the handbook’s possible sources) and paratexts (texts of the Greek corpus which may proceed from the same source). The volume is completed with up-to-date bibliographical references, an appendix on Cornutus’s etymological method, and three final indexes (Greek words, authors and works cited, themes and concepts discussed).
This work can attract everybody interested in ancient mythology and its relation to philosophy, facilitating the reading of one of the ancient key texts on this issue: Cornutus’s "Compendium of Greek Theological Traditions."
