'The last thing one finds when doing a work is what one should put first, for then all things being caused and causing, helped and helping, mediately and immediately, and all being related by a natural and insensible bond that connects the most distant and most different, I believe it is as impossible to know the parts without knowing the whole as it is to know the whole without knowing the parts in particular.' (Pascal, Pensée, 1978).
