?Chase has done a truly outstanding job in selecting 700 of the 5000 or more books published in this category since 1970, classifying them by religious tradition (evangelical, liberal, etc.), and offering quite helpful succinct annotations about their usefulness. She divides the books into three categories, with sub-divisions within the categories, covering spiritual psychodynamics; family and developmental issues; and the wider community (disciplining, simple lifestyle, social action). Books are arranged so that different treatments of the same topic are adjacent; there are also good indexes: author, title, and subject. About the author

Elise Chase, former inspirational reading columnist for Library Journal and compiler of Healing Faith: An Annotated Bibliography of Christian Self-Help Books, holds an MA in pastoral ministry. She helped found and served as volunteer for an emergency homeless shelter at College Church, an interdenominational fellowship in Northampton, Massachusetts. She has recently volunteered at the church's breakfast ministry to homeless neighbors and currently serves on the Board of Deacons and Missions Committee.
