The paintings are inspired by his childhood memories of holidays spent in British coastal destinations such as Scarborough, Filey, Whitby and Skegness, and his lifelong pastime of beach walks during UK winters. Hirst was influenced in part by Abstract Expressionism, specifically Robert Motherwell's
Beside the Sea paintings from the 1960s. With their spattered textures mimicking sprays of water, Hirst's paintings reveal an unerring captivation with the sea and its connections with awe, inevitability and nothingness. The exhibition catalog showcases full-color reproductions of the complete works, complemented by thoughtful texts from British writer and curator David Campany and British art critic James Cahill.
About the author
Damien Hirst (b. 1965) rose to fame in the late 1980s as a leading member of the group that became known as the Young British Artists (YBAs). He is now internationally recognised to be one of the most important living artists. Through a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing, Hirst explores the complex relationships between art, beauty, religion, science, life and death. He lives and works in London, Gloucestershire and Devon.
David Campany is a British writer and curator, as well as editor, broadcaster and educator, renowned for his contribution to the subject of photography. David has worked internationally with art museums including MoMA, New York, Tate, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as with photography institutions The Photographer’s Gallery, London and ICP, New York, and has published books with MIT Press, Thames & Hudson and MACK. David has also written extensively on photography for The New Yorker, The Times, The Telegraph, The Financial Times, Frieze, Tate Etc., Aperture, Source, and FOAM.
James Cahill is a British writer, critic and art historian. His debut novel Tiepolo Blue was published in 2022. His career has spanned the art world and academia, and he has written and lectured extensively on contemporary and historical art. He has curated exhibitions at King’s College London and the Museum of Classical Archaeology, Cambridge, examining the connections between contemporary art and classical antiquity. His contributions to publications include Apollo, The Burlington Magazine, The Times Literary Supplement, The Los Angeles Review of Books and The London Review of Books.
