The book deals with a new scientific approach developed under the Title of "General Subject Didactics". This concept is based on the existence of several academic disciplines called Subject(-matter) didactics or disciplinary didactics (as in many parts of Europe) or Subject pedagogies (as in Japan, for example), which have content-based teaching and learning in school and beyond as their object of study.General Subject Didactics can be defined as the theory of Subject didactics. It observes and reflects on how the individual Subject didactics explore Subject-specific teaching and learning, both by top-down reflections and by bottom-up comparisons. The empirical basis derives from a comprehensive study in Germany where 17 Subject didactics were compared on the basis of six impulses, e. g. reference sciences of Subject didactics, sources and selection of Subject content or research formats applied. This allows to gain insights into the commonalities of all related disciplines and to identify differences among them. Both are commented upon by four international experts, three from Europe and one from Israel.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Johannes Vollmer studierte Anglistik, Geschichte und Soziologie an den Universitäten Hamburg, Tübingen und der FU Berlin. Honorarmitarbeiter am Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung in Berlin (empirisches Forschungsprojekt zur Erfassung von Englischleistungen in der Sekundarstufe I), dann Hochschulassistent (1977-1983) und Akademischer Rat (ab 1984) für Englische Sprachwissenschaft bzw. Sprachlehr-/lernforschung am Fachbereich Sprache, Literatur, Medien der Universität Osnabrück. Dort 1981 Promotion über "Fremdsprachenlernen und Fremdsprachenfähigkeit" (empirische Strukturen in internationaler Perspektive), 1994 Habilitation (Beschreibung und Analyse von Lernersprache Deutsch/Englisch), bis 2006 Professor für Anglistik/Linguistik und Didaktik des Englischen ebenda. Gastprofessuren in Leipzig und St. Louis, USA. Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen: Zwei- und Mehrsprachigkeit, Zweit- und Fremdsprachenerwerb, Bilinguales Lehren und Lernen, Fremdsprachliche Kompetenzforschung, Bildungsstandards und Curriculumsplanung, Sprachlich-kognitive Dimensionen in allen Fächern. Durchführung eines DFG-Projekts (2002-2006) zu Fachlernen und Sprachlichkeit. Seit 2006 Mitarbeit beim Europarat in Strasbourg, Sprachenpolitische Abteilung: Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeit zur Förderung europäischer Mehrsprachigkeit. Mitbegründer der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Fremdsprachenforschung (DGFF) sowie der Gesellschaft für Fachdidaktik (GFD); seit 1990 Beiratsmitglied der Zeitschrift für Fremdsprachenforschung. Zahlreiche Publikationen.
