José Moreno-Serrano, os seus estudos de licenciatura foram efectuados na Universidade Nacional de Loja, os seus estudos de pós-graduação nas Universidades: Politécnica de Madrid para o Mestrado em Biotecnologia Vegetal e na Universidade Complutense de Madrid para o Mestrado em Virologia; mais tarde, os seus estudos de doutoramento em Genética Vegetal na UPM.
