Flood frequency analysis involves the fitting of a probability model to the sample of annual peak flood recorded over a period of 30 years observation, for a catchment of a Prakasam Barrage. The probability plot and flood frequency curves by Gumbel distribution of Prakasam Barrage reservoir are prepared using three different plotting position formulas which are Weibull, Gringorten and L-moments. And reservoir capacity is determined by using the Mass Inflow curve and demand curve. The model parameters established are then used to predict the extreme events of large recurrence interval. Reliable flood frequency estimates are vital for flood plain management; to protect the public, minimize flood related costs to Government and private enterprises, for designing and locating hydraulic structures and assessing hazards related to the development of flood plains. Here by the study, the discharge of Prakasam Barrage during floods is more than the Prakasam Barrage original discharge. So to store the flood, a hydraulic structure is to construct to utilize the water during peak time which may be supplied to the irrigation fields or used to generate the hydraulic power by constructing.
