International maritime transportation is one of the pillars on which the process of economic and commercial globalization is based. From this sector have emerged the main technological and organizational changes that led to the development of intermodalism and transport chains without cargo breakage. At the same time, with economic liberalization and increasing deregulation in the transportation sector, shipping lines and their multimodal divisions have tended to group together in strategic alliances to expand their coverage, reduce costs and offer a wider range of services in order to face the strong global competition for the transportation and distribution of goods. This process is resulting in a new structure for shipping and ports.
