But then the great difficulty lies in storing the electrical energy produced. Storing electricity as efficiently as we can store water or petrol is impossible at present (solar PV or other energy sources). In solar systems, inter-seasonal storage is virtually impossible to implement. With a solar pump that runs on the sun, we can store water rather than electricity. New forms of storage may borrow from the properties of lithium-based intercalation chemistry.
