In the Company of Artists - A History of Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture

"In the Company of Artists" ist die erste umfassende Studie über die Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, die inmitten der Wirren des Zweiten Weltkriegs von Künstler:innen für Künstler:innen gegründet wurde. Der Band befasst sich mit der Philosophie und Ausstrahlung der einflussreichen Sommerkunstschule und erweitert damit unser Bild von der amerikanischen Kunstproduktion und den alternativen Bildungsangeboten der Nachkriegszeit.

Der umfangreiche Band stützt sich auf Primärquellen, darunter neue und unveröffentlichte Interviews und Diskussionsrunden mit aktuellen und ehemaligen Studierenden der Fakultät, Fotografien und Standbilder, Ephemera und Kunstwerke aus über siebzig Jahren. Augenzeugenberichte gewähren Einblick in diese sehr private Institution, die in Bezug auf Repräsentanz, Gleichberechtigung und Inklusion ihrer Zeit weit voraus war. Der Band umfasst zudem ein eigens in Auftrag gegebenes Portfolio mit Fotografien der gefeierten Künstlerin Elle Pérez.

About the author

Faye Hirsch, PhD in Art History, Yale University, serves as Program Coordinator in the School of Art+Design at SUNY Purchase. An author, curator and critic, she has published widely on contemporary art and was senior editor of Art in America (2003-12).

Ingrid Schaffner has written extensively on contemporary art and curatorial practice, authoring more than 20 books, 200 articles, reviews, and features. She was chief curator at the ICA, Philadelphia (2000-15), curated the 57th Carnegie International, and is currently the first Curator of the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX.
