Wahrend Au-pair offiziell als Kulturaustausch betrachtet wird, zeigt die Forschung, dass sich Au-pair in den letzten Jahren stark verandert hat: vor allem junge Frauen aus Osteuropa nutzen es als legale Einreisemöglichkeit, deutsche berufstatige Frauen, um die Versorgungsarbeiten an Dritte zu delegieren. Der Wandel von Au-pair wird dabei als paradigmatisch für eine zunehmende Feminisierung von Arbeit und Verantwortung verstanden, ausgelöst durch eine Reihe von Transformationsprozessen der ost- und westeuropaischen Gesellschaften. Sabine Hess zeigt hierdurch nicht nur eine Reorganisation von Arbeits- und Privatsphare. Sie beobachtet auch die Entstehung feminisierter transnationaler Raume als kreative Reaktion auf die Lebensverhaltnisse in Osteuropa und die Einwanderungspolitiken Westeuropas. Insofern verbindet die Autorin innovativ Transformations-, Migrations- und Hausarbeitsforschung unter einer transnationalen Perspektive.
