Il verbo "essere", come elemento di relazione tra due espressioni, interviene nella formazione di tre tipi di strutture: ascrittiva, identificativa ed enfatizzante. Queste tre strutture hanno scopi diversi: le strutture ascrittive assegnano una proprietà al soggetto (Peter è intelligente), le strutture identificative identificano un'entità (Peter è il dottore) e le strutture enfatizzanti evidenziano un segmento di una struttura di base (John era quello che abbiamo visto ieri). Queste ultime sono estremamente complesse e sono state studiate solo di recente. Di conseguenza, quasi nessun testo tocca tutti gli aspetti che le definiscono, motivo per cui, se si vuole avere una visione globale di queste costruzioni, è necessario combinare e giocare con un gran numero di materiali. Per cercare di risolvere questa situazione, in questo libro riuniamo i tratti che li definiscono e li caratterizzano, nonché i punti in cui possono convergere con le caratteristiche ascrittive ed enfatizzanti sopra citate.
