About the author
Steven J. Schapiro is an associate professor of comparative medicine in the Department of Veterinary Sciences at the Michale E. Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Schapiro earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Davis in 1985 after receiving his B.A. in behavioral biology from Johns Hopkins University. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Caribbean Primate Research Center of the University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Schapiro has participated in international meetings and courses on primatology and laboratory animal science in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. He has edited the three volumes of the third edition of the
Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science along with Jann Hau. He has also coedited one issue of the
ILAR Journal. He is a member of a number of primatology and animal behavior societies, and is currently the treasurer and vice president for membership of the International Primatological Society. He is also a past president, former treasurer, and former meeting coordinator of the American Society of Primatologists, as well as an Honorary member of the Association of Primate Veterinarians. Dr. Schapiro is an advisor or consultant for a number of primate facilities that produce, manage, and conduct research with nonhuman primates in the United States and abroad.
