About the author

Son of hymn-writer Charles, and nephew of John, the founder of Methodism, Samuel Wesley was a musical prodigy. He was recognized as the finest organist and extemporizer of his day, and described by William Boyce as 'the English Mozart'. In spite of his family background, he developed a strong connection with the Roman Catholic Church in his teens.

Summary

for SAATTB and optional organWesley set this text from Psalm 110 twice - once in 1814 for four voices and again in 1827 for six voices. This latter version, though short, has considerable drive and impact, making it highly suitable as an introit, perhaps for an Ordination or Consecration.

Additional text

Tu es sacerdos was described by Vincent Novello, the pioneering publisher, as a grand and masterly composition full of vigorous energy, dignified expression and admirable counterpoint; and so it is.
