Eleanor Emily Hodgman Porter, autora de Poliana, nasceu em Littleton, New Hampshire, nos Estados Unidos, em 19 de dezembro de 1868. Frequentou o New England Conservatory e se tornou cantora. Depois do casamento com John Lyman Porter e da mudança para Massachusetts, em 1892, começou a escrever e publicar seus contos e romances. Morreu em Cambridge, Massachusetts, em 21 de maio de 1920.
