'When life gives you LIMES, rearrange the letters until they say SMILE'. The longevity of endodontically involved teeth has been greatly enhanced by continuing developments made in endodontic and restorative procedures. Endodontic treatment saves the tooth from extraction but only adequate restoration will restore the tooth and ensure its durability and its function. Pierre Fauchard described the original post-retained restoration in 1746. Roots of anterior maxillary teeth were selected and gold or silver pivots (posts) were retained with an adhesive called "mastic", softened by heat. Successful restoration of endodontically treated teeth requires an effective coronal seal, protection of the remaining tooth, restoring function, and acceptable esthetics. A post-retained crown may be indicated to fulfill all these requirements.
