About the author

Professor David Deakins is an honorary researcher at the Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, Lancaster University Management School, Lancaster University, and Adjunct Professor, School of Management, Massey University in New Zealand. He has over 30 years’ experience of research with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs. He returned to the United Kingdom (UK) in 2014 after retiring from Massey University. Whilst at Massey, he led various research projects undertaken for the New Zealand Government on SMEs, including regulation, internationalization and innovation. He also completed consultancy and research projects for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) body and for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Dr Jonathan M. Scott is a senior lecturer in Innovation and Strategy at Waikato Management School, Tauranga Central Business District (CBD) campus, University of Waikato, New Zealand, where he teaches various innovation, entrepreneurship and strategy courses. He is a co-editor of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior and Research, and has recently been a Visiting Research Fellow at the Entrepreneurship Unit, University of Turku, Finland. Jonathan’s collaborative research focuses on three main themes: (1) entrepreneurial finance and diversity, in particular gender and ethnic differences; (2) business support and policy; and (3) understanding small firms’ international comparative differences in various spatial, social and institutional contexts.
