En attribuant les noms de Gustave Zédé et de Jacques Chevallier à deux des quatre bâtiments ravitailleurs en cours de construction, la Marine nationale honore deux ingénieurs qui ont joué des rôles majeurs dans l'aventure des sous-marins français. Bénéficiant des intuitions de Dupuy de Lome, Gustave Zédé conçut le Gymnote en 1888, premier véritable sous-marin capable de naviguer de façon durable et maîtrisée en plongée.
Quelques années plus tard, Maxime Laubeuf invente le double système propulsif qui, devenu propulsion diesel-électrique, donnera au sous-marin son autonomie et en fera une véritable arme offensive. Elle jouera un rôle majeur dans les deux conftits mondiaux.
Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les États-Unis inventent la propulsion nucléaire et en livrent la technologie au Royaume-Uni. Grâce à Jacques Chevallier, la France réussit à développer de façon indépendante son premier sous-marin à propulsion nucléaire, le Redoutable lancé en 1967.
Avec le sous-marin nucléaire d'attaque Suffren, admis au service actif en juin 2022, bientôt suivi des cinq autres bâtiments de la série, la France disposera de sous-marins parmi les plus modernes de l'âge numérique, de technologies comparables à celles des sous-marins américains de type Virginia et britanniques de type Astute.
Ainsi, pendant plus de cent-trente ans, la France s'est maintenue à la pointe des technologies complexes et des nombreux savoir-faire nécessaires à la maîtrise du sous-marin militaire. C'est le panorama de ces domaines techniques que cet ouvrage cherche à parcourir jusqu'à l'état de l'art actuel et les perspectives prometteuses qui permettront de continuer à maintenir en mer l'avantage technologique.
Toutefois, la technologie ne doit pas faire oublier que sa mise en œuvre est aussi l'histoire de marins, de très haute technicité, qui réalisent dans un métier des plus contraignants leur part de rêve.

By naming two of the four fleet support ships under construction after Gustave Zédé and Jacques Chevallier, the French Navy is honouring two engineers who played major roles in the history of French submarines. Benefiting from the intuitions of Dupuy de Lome, Gustave Zédé designed the Gymnote in 1888, the first real submarine capable of navigating submerged in stable and controlled conditions.
A few years later, Maxime Laubeuf invented the dual propulsion system which, later called diesel-electric propulsion, gave the submarine its autonomy and made it a real offensive weapon. It will play a major role in both World Wars.
After World War II, the United States invented nuclear propulsion and delivered the technology to the United Kingdom. Thanks to Jacques Chevallier, the France achieved to independently developing its first nuclear-powered submarine, Le Redoutable launched in 1967.
With the Suffren nuclear attack submarine, commissioned in June 2022, soon to be followed by its five sister ships, the France will have some of the most modern submarines of the digital age, benefitting from technologies comparable to those of the US Navy Virginia class and British Astute class submarines.
For more than one hundred and thirty years, France has remained at the cutting edge of complex technologies and of the many knowhows necessary to build and operate a submarine force. It is the panorama of these technical fields that this book seeks to travel through up to the current state of the art and the promising prospects that will allow to continue to maintain the technological advantage at sea.
However, technology should not make us forget that its implementation is also the story of sailors, of very high technicality, who realize in a profession of the most constraining their part of the dream.
