Diego Garcia is the largest of fifty-five islands, separated by the United Kingdom from its colonies of Mauritius and Seychelles, to form in 1965 the British Indian Ocean Territory, created exclusively for military purposes, has been a strategic position of the United States in the Indian Ocean since 1966.Diego Garcia, became in the 21st century a facility of great importance for the U.S. conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, within a geographic area with few permanent bases. Mauritius, for its part, initiated a campaign to challenge the United Kingdom on the status and sovereignty in Chagos, which ended with the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice in 2019, where it is expressed that the retention of the archipelago is illegitimate, requesting the end of the colonial administration.
