A wound is an injury that damages the outermost layer of the skin, also known as the epidermis. It involves punctured and lacerated skin, or a contusion caused by a blunt force compression or trauma. Wounds are classified into two major categories, namely, open wounds and closed wounds. Open wounds include incisions, lacerations, abrasions, puncture and avulsions, while closed wounds encompass contusions, hematomas and crush injury. The healing of a wound involves replacement of the damaged or destroyed tissue by a new tissue. Wound healing involves a controlled sequence of biochemical events, which are set into action for repairing the damage. The process of healing takes place in phases, which include blood clotting, inflammation, tissue growth and tissue remodeling.
