About the author










Gert Oostindie is Professor of Caribbean History at Leiden University and Director of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV). He has published over 30 books and 150 articles on (Dutch) Caribbean history, politics, and anthropology.

Jessica V. Roitman is a researcher at the KITLV and a lecturer at Leiden University. She was a fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and received a NWO post-doctoral fellowship. She publishes on Atlantic trade, migration, identity, citizenship, and inter-cultural interactions.
