About the author

Victor Kiernan (1913-2009) was Chair of Modern History at Edinburgh University. A member of the Communist Party Historians' Group with E. P. Thompson and Christopher Hill, he spent several years teaching in Lahore and translated the Urdu poets Iqbal and Faiz. His many books included Lords of Human Kind, America: The New Imperialism, and studies of Horace and Shakespeare.Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written more than a dozen books on world history and politics-including Pirates of the Caribbean, Bush in Babylon, The Clash of Fundamentalisms and The Obama Syndrome-as well as five novels in his Islam Quintet series and scripts for the stage and screen. He is an editor of the New Left Review and lives in London.
