The Gulewamkulu plays significant roles in the socio- economic, cultural and political development.This traditional institution is involved in community development activities taking place in the society.The coming western development with its modernization theory, disregarded Gulewamkulu and prohibit it in any form of development. Recently it has been observed that Gulewamkulu because of its dynamism has be playing a leading role in community development activities.

About the author

Anthony Mtuta is a holder of Msc in Environmental studies, Bsc Degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy and Diploma in Theology. He is currently the Head of Anthropology Department at the Catholic University of Malawi. He is the member of Research Ethics Committee, He is the Faculty representative in the board of Senate at the CUNIMA.
