According to a well-established tradition, Marseille or rather Massalia, was founded by Phocaean nationals in Asia Minor. Hence its nickname «la cité phocéenne». Its etymology has never been studied in depth. Referring to an epigraph kept apart since its discovery in 1845, the author evokes the possibility that Massalia was founded by the Phoenicians or by the Punics. Its name would have Semitic origins and has an attested meaning both by the Bible and by the stele of the Moabite king Mesha discovered in 1868.
