This is the true story of a family forced to live halfway across the world from their homeland. Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer and her husband Carl, lived in Germany before the Nazis forced the couple to flee with their two daughters. After finding Backwoods Farms in Vermont, Alice wrote this memoir about their time there building chicken coops and breaking up duck fights. Despite endless work, brutal winters and melancholy, she discovered that they had found a home.

Alice Herdan-Zuckmayer is a writer. After the success of her memoir The Farm in the Green Mountains, she wrote two more, Das Kästchen about her childhood, and Das Scheusal about her dog.
