Die Struktur von Grenz- und Oberflächen kann man jetzt nicht mehr nur indirekt durch Beugungsexperimente, sondern auch direkt mit Hilfe der Rastertunnel- und Kraftmikroskopie aufklären. Fortschritte bei der Abbildung solcher Flächen und neue Techniken, die innerhalb der letzten 10 Jahre eingeführt wurden, sind die Themen dieses Bandes. Mehrere Kapitel widmen sich der Elektrokristallisation und der Elektroabscheidung von Metallen; auch ex-situ-Verfahren wie Reflexionselektronenmikroskopie oder Mikroskopie mit langsamen Elektronen werden berücksichtigt.
