Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is estimated to affect more than half of all adults and is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. When caused by high-risk HPV genotypes (HR-HPV), this infection can persist and lead to the development of cervical cancer. It is possible that polymorphisms in genes such as Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF ) and Interleukin 18 (IL18) may influence the persistence of HPV infection. Early detection of precancerous lesions and prophylactic vaccination are ways to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccines available in Burkina Faso only protect against HPV 16 and 18, while studies in Ouagadougou have shown that these two genotypes are not the most predominant in women. In order to have a comprehensive picture of HPV-HR infection in Burkina Faso, it was important to look for circulating genotypes in other cities in the country and for associated genetic risk factors.
