This work presents the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles by an ecological method in order to evaluate their performance in the retention of the cationic dye methylene blue by adsorption. The formation of copper oxide nanoparticles was confirmed by different physico-chemical techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, IR absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The XRD diffractograms show the crystallinity of the obtained nanoparticles was affected by temperature. The infrared spectroscopy shows the presence of absorption bands attributed essentially to the functional groups characteristic of the studied biological extract. Scanning electron microscopy observations show that the morphology of copper oxide nanoparticles is mono-dispersed and agglomerated.Overall, the prepared nanoparticles showed exceptional performance in the adsorption of methylene blue.
