Focused on the drama in the lives of 'ordinary' high school runners rather than just the team elites, The Middle Distances is a blend of narratives about their three seasons of a running year and vignettes of past West Genesee competitors and others who helped shape the traditions of Wildcats distance running.

About the author

For over thirty years, Jim Vermeulen has coached scholastic middle-distance runners in the upstate New York school district of West Genesee. As head coach for varsity cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track teams, he has worked with thousands of aspiring athletes and coached hundreds of teams that have included state champions and national All-Americans. He is also the editor of the 1989 book of climbing stories, Mountain Journeys, and for the past five years he has been a monthly columnist on high school runners for the NYMilesplit website. Retired from teaching, he continues to coach cross-country and outdoor track teams. He lives in Syracuse, N.Y. with his wife, Marsha.
