Published in conjunction with the exhibition « Monet in Full Light » at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, this volume is part of the celebrations marking the 140th anniversary of Claude Monet's first trip to Monte-Carlo and the Riviera. The leader of the Impressionist movement discovered, at a time when he was halfway through his longlife, the landscapes and light that would constitute a key moment in his oeuvre and his career.
As his entire body of work demonstrates, from his youth in Le Havre to his final paintings in Giverny, Monet did not seek to paint a motif but rather a moment, an atmosphere.
Focusing on the paintings he executed on the Riviera - more than twenty canvases - the book puts Claude Monet's work into perspective with the aid of archive documents and period photographs, recreating the places that inspired the artist and shedding new light on his practice.
