Why a sociology of women and gender in Burkina Faso? In Burkina Faso, a country of men of integrity, women's lives are particularly marked by discriminatory gender relations that are prejudicial to their full development. Their social destiny is negotiated under a tension between tradition and modernity, between empowerment and impoverishment. The birth of a girl as a first child is not always welcomed with joy. In the school environment, sexual violence and harassment threaten the future of many adolescent girls.
