About the author

About YANG Jing

Yang Jing is not only a renowned pipa virtuoso of Chinese origin on stages around the world, but also a popular and unique composer with an innovative spirit of exploration: building on a vast amalgam of musical history from both Asian and Western traditions. She writes music for culturally mixed instrumental ensembles as well as for choir, theatre, multimedia concerts and film. Her works have been performed in Europe, China, Japan and the USA.

Ms Yang's musical training began at the age of six at the Henan Opera Music School and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, followed by courses in composition and festival management with Minoru Miki in Tokyo, and finally a master's degree in composition and theory from the Berne University of the Arts. She has taught in the music departments of universities in Switzerland and the United States.

After twelve years as pipa soloist with the China National Orchestra of Traditional Music, she has emerged as an innovative musician on the world's stages: The Barbican Centre in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Golden Hall in Vienna, the New National Theatre of Japan in Tokyo, the Kultur- und Kongresshalle in Lucerne, Switzerland, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Hall in Germany, the Jerusalem Concert Hall in Israel and the Beijing Concert Hall in China, to name but a few, have presented her unique and varied concerts.

Yang Jing lives in Switzerland and is on her way to bring more musical surprises.
