Le memorie della campagna russa di Napoleone del 1812 si riflettono nelle memorie dei generali e nei taccuini dei soldati che vi parteciparono, e molti scrittori e storici se ne sono interessati. Stendhal ha partecipato a questa campagna, è un testimone oculare, le memorie dei soldati erano una delle sue letture preferite. Anche Balzac ha immortalato il coraggio dei soldati, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Fontane, Johann Peter Hebel lo hanno descritto.
