C'est d'une importante collaboration entre l'Iac - Frac Rhône-Alpes et le Musée d'art moderne de Saint-Étienne que sont issues leurs collections de photographies.
A l'origine, Jean-François Chevrier, historien de l'art et de la photographie, fut, en 1985, chargé par le Frac Rhône-Alpes de constituer un fonds d'oeuvres représentatives de l'histoire de la photographie, ce qui conduisit, perspective inattendue pour un Frac, à intégrer à ce fonds les premières générations de photographes. Le dépôt de ce fonds au Musée d'art moderne favorisa des partis pris communs et la constitution de deux collections parallèles et complémentaires entendues comme des traversées historiques des problématiques de la photographie.
Cette longue collaboration devait nécessairement déboucher sur une double exposition d'envergure destinée à mettre en valeur auprès du public ce très riche patrimoine. Ce livre augmenté d'un cd-rom contenant l'inventaire des collections constitue donc à la fois la mémoire des expositions et le catalogue des collections.
The photographic collections are the fruit of an important collaboration between the Iac - Frac Rhône-Alpes and the Museum of Modern Art of Saint-Étienne.
In 1985, the Frac Rhône-Alpes originally commissioned art and photographic historian, Jean-François Chevrier, to build up a collection of works representing the history of photography. This led to the incorporation of works by the first generations of photographers - a thrilling and unexpected prospect for a regional body such as the Frac. This collection was deposited to the Museum of Modern Art, thus nurturing the common interests of both parties and giving rise to two parallel, complementary collections as historical cross-sections spanning the main issues of photography.
The natural outcome of such a longstanding collaboration was a large-scale twofold exhibition with the aim of bringing this rich cultural heritage to the public eye. This book, complete with CD-Rom of the collections' inventory, is therefore both a reminder of the exhibitions and a catalogue of the collections.
