Since the aftermath of the First World War, there has been a growing awareness of the rights of the child by States with the adoption, on September 1, 1924, by the League of Nations (forerunner of the United Nations), of an International Declaration on the Rights of the Child, known as the Declaration of Geneva. This legal instrument is the first international text that launched the very first call to protect children by clearly stating: "Humanity must give the child the best it has to offer". A wide variety of international legal instruments have followed, the most significant of which are highlighted in this book.Today, with a little observation of international life, it is necessary to recognize that the child is no longer seen under the sole prism of a being who must benefit from special protection measures, but rather as a social actor in his own right whose opinion is guaranteed to be respected.Despite the encouraging efforts that are being made here and there, African countries are still struggling to internalize this irreversible international dynamic.
