About the author

Nader Jalili is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mary and Richard Templeton Dean of Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU). He was formerly Professor and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama (UA) from 2018. Prior to his department headship at UA, Dr Jalili was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Department Chair for Graduate Studies and Research at Northeastern University. An ASME Fellow, he is an innovative leader and researcher, known for bringing the resources of engineering education and research to undergraduate and graduate students, industry partners, and community outreach programs. Dr Jalili is a recipient of numerous international and institutional awards for his research, leadership, teaching, and service including the 2022 ASME Michael J. Rabins Leadership Award, the 2017 Northeastern University College of Engineering Outstanding Service Award, the 2015 Northeastern University Excellence in Teaching Award, and the 2003 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, as well as consecutive Professor of the Year Awards for teaching excellence at all his prior institutions.Nicholas W. Candelino is a practicing Researcher and Engineer in Model-Based Control Systems at GE Research. He is a member of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
