Après s'être confronté à la photographie au milieu des années quatre-vingt-dix, Gérard Traquandi retourne aux tableaux et s'engage dès lors frontalement dans cette voie de la peinture, gravissant les sommets les uns après les autres. A la recherche de rencontres toujours plus intenses avec la nature, le végétal et le minéral, il s'adonne à de longues marches dans les massifs alpins, du Queyras, de la Grave... d'où il prélève, dans un face-à-face avec le réel, des situations et des sensations qui, de retour à l'atelier, sont le point de départ, le référent sensible lui permettant d'accéder à une autre réalité, à un autre rapport de force, celui du tableau.

After grappling with photography in the mid-1990s, Gerard Traquandi returned to pictures and a head-on involvement in the path of painting, scaling the various peaks one after the other. In this quest for ever more intense rendez-vous with nature, vegetable and mineral, he undertook many a lengthy hike in the Alpine ranges, the Queyras, and the Grave... In this close encounter with reality he gleaned situations and sensations which, once back in the studio, became the springboard and the perceptible referent, helping him to gain access to another reality, and another power play, that of the painting.
