Having gained an international reputation at an early age thanks to his brilliant Pop period, and already hailed as one of the key figures of his generation, Martial Raysse instigated a dramatic change of course in the 1970s, which led him to develop, within the intimate confines of his studio, a pictorial and sculptural oeuvre that was to take the form of a dialogue between the techniques of the grand masters and the history of art. These long years of unwavering patience and determination have resulted in some of the most striking works to emerge on the international art scene in recent years.
