The book underscores the notion that an understanding of presidential spouses is central to the study of the American presidency. At the same time the volume dispels the myth that Eleanor Roosevelt and her successors have been the only presidential spouses to make significant public and political contributions to the nation.
About the author
Robert P. Watson has published seven books and more than a hundred scholarly articles on American politics and presidential spouses. He edited the encyclopedia American First Ladies, has been interviewed by numerous major media organizations, and has taught at several universities, including the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Florida Atlantic University. Currently the editor of White House Studies, a journal of scholarship and commentary on the politics and history of the White House, Watson lives in Boca Raton, Florida. Anthony J. Eksterowicz has authored and coauthored more than thirty scholarly articles dealing with executive/legislative relations, presidential transitions, presidential leadership, and first ladies. He is the coeditor and author of American Democracy: Representation, Participation, and the Future of the Republic, The Post Cold War Presidency, and Public Journalism and Political Knowledge. Eksterowicz, a professor of political science at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, lives in Afton, Virginia.
