About the author

Manfred Elfstrom is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science, University of British Columbia, Okanagan.

Summary

Strikes, protests and riots by Chinese workers are rising. Using interviews and statistics, Elfstrom shows that this unrest is altering governance in China at all levels. However, the result is political development of a profoundly contradictory sort: the state is becoming more responsive and more repressive at the same time.

Foreword

Rising labour unrest is changing Chinese governance from below; Elfstrom shows that this is occurring in unexpected and contradictory ways.
