During August of 2001 and 2002, a father and son took a baseball trip to the Midwest and West Coast, respectively. As they traveled, they wrote of baseball, the country and its people. While visits to the major league ballparks created the roadmap for the trips, the journey described in Between Innings was always about their time together. They traveled by plane, train, bus, and automobile, logged about 10,000 miles, met a few old friends, and made some new ones.

Their travels took them to places as diverse as the ravines of West Virginia, the Midwest industrial belt, and the vast terrain of the Mojave Desert and Grand Canyon. The people they met came from all walks of life, many representing an astounding number of new immigrants to this country.

They observed baseball packaged as mass entertainment, yet felt privileged to still witness the purity of the game in some special places. In all, they learned about each other, about the country and its people, and reaffirmed their love for the game and the lessons it passes on from one generation to another.
