Madame Bovary was the debut novel of Gustave Flaubert and depicts a beautiful young maiden, Emma Rouault who aspires to lead a wealthy, passionate and romantic life. She gets married to a dull country doctor, Charles Bovary, who takes good care of her but is unable to satisfy her intimate needs. The monotony of her married life stifles her to such an extent that she finds ways of escaping it and ultimately commits adultery. Attacked for obscenity when it was first published in 1857, the novel is now regarded a masterpiece of literary realism, that depicts the boldness of a woman to fulfill her desires in a world that respects only the passions of a man.
