Die vorliegende Publikation versammelt eine Auswahl von Texten von Josef Strau, die zwischen den Jahren 2005 und 2020 entstanden sind, beginnend mit "The Non-Productive Attitude" (2005), seinen prominenten Reflexionen über die anti-produktive Haltung in der damaligen Kölner Kunstszene. Die Erfahrung, einen Essay über Nacht und innerhalb weniger Stunden und ohne Zeit zur Überarbeitung schreiben zu müssen, löste sein Interesse an der Erforschung von Formen des absichtslosen Schreibens aus, und damit an der Ersetzung des absichtlichen Autors durch einen unbewussten Schreiber/Produzenten. Dieser Modus des automatischen Schreibens hat sich bis heute manifestiert und ist zum Kern von Straus künstlerischer Praxis geworden.

Summary

This publication assembles a selection of the above mentioned texts produced between the years 2005 and 2020, starting with “The Non-Productive Attitude“ (2005), his prominent reflections on the anti-productive attitude in the Cologne art scene of the time. The experience of having to write the essay overnight within a few hours, and without any time for revision, triggered his interest in exploring forms of unintentional writing, and consequently the replacement of the intentional author by an unconscious writer / producer. This mode of automatic writing has manifested itself until today, and has become the core of Strau’s artistic practice.
