Holly studeerde muziek aan de University of Oxford en King's College London voordat ze haar PhD afrondde aan Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. Daarna bekleedde ze een postdoctorale studiebeurs aan het University College Dublin, waar ze ook musicologie doceerde. Holly is momenteel docent aan de School of Music, University of Liverpool.
